Best Performing Russell 3,000 Stocks YTD

The average Russell 3,000 stock rose roughly 18% in 2012.  At just 15 trading days into 2013, the average Russell 3,000 stocks is already up 5.44% year to date.  102 of the stocks in the Russell 3,000 are already up more than 20% year to date, while 9 are already up more than 50%.

Below is a list of the 40 best performing Russell 3,000 stocks so far this year.  As shown, Pacific Biosciences of California (PACB) is up the most with a gain of 64.71%, followed closely by Sangamo Biosciences (SGMO) at 64.56%.  Map Pharma (MAPP), Unwire Planet (UPIP) and Trulia (TRLA) round out the top five.  The other four stocks that are up more than 50% so far this year are MTSN, RJET, CNDO and BTX.  A few other notables on the list of 2013's big winners are WisdomTree Investments (WETF), Office Depot (ODP), Krispy Kreme (KKD), Best Buy (BBY) and 3D Systems (DDD).

Five of the ten top performers are biotech stocks, which isn't a surprise given their volatile nature.  The Health Care sector has the highest representation on the list, followed by Consumer Discretionary and Technology.
