S&P 500 Has Best Last Day of Year Since 1974

Today's big rally of 1.70% for the S&P 500 was its best gain on the final trading day of the year since 1974.  Below we highlight a table showing the best final trading days of the year for the S&P 500 in its history.  As shown, the index has been higher on the first day of the next year six out of eight times when the last day of the year has been up more than 1%.  But the two strongest days to end a year -- 1929 and 1932 -- were followed up with 1%+ declines on the first day of the next year.
