"A Case of the Mondays" and "TGIF" in 2012

With 2012 coming to an end, below is a look at how the market has performed by weekday throughout the year.  In the first chart below, we highlight the S&P 500's average change on each day of the trading week.  As shown, the S&P has averaged its best gains on Thursday at +0.12%, followed by Tuesday at +0.10% and Friday at +0.09%.  The two worst days of the week have been Monday and Wednesday, which have both averaged declines in 2012.

In the second chart we highlight the percentage of the time that the S&P 500 has been positive on each day of the week this year.  Thursday and Friday have been up days the most at 57%, while Monday is the only day that has seen declines more often than gains.

Monday has clearly been the worst day of the week this year, while Thursday and Friday have been the best.
