The Best and Worst of Earnings Season

The third quarter earnings season is over now that Wal-Mart (WMT) has reported.  The average one-day change of the 2,158 US stocks that reported this season was -0.20%, so stocks as a whole reacted negatively on their report days.  Below is a list of the best and worst performing stocks on their report days this season.

As shown, K-Swiss (KSWS) barely beat out GMX Resources (GMXR) as the earnings season winner with a one-day gain of 35.53%.  GMXR gained 35.42%.  Two other stocks posted gains of more than 30% on their report days as well -- Big 5 Sports (BGFV) and Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF).  Some other notables on the list of earnings season winners include Taser (TASR), AOL, TripAdvisor (TRIP) and Facebook (FB).

THQ Inc (THQI) was the biggest loser this earnings season when it got cut in half on November 6th.  Active Network (ACTV) was the second worst with a decline of 41.66%, followed by BioCryst Pharma (BCRX) at -40.35%.  Some other well known stocks that were big losers this season include Western Union (WU), Groupon (GRPN), New York Times (NYT), Tempur Pedic (TPX) and Zillow (Z).
